Staff Changes

July 2011

Fran Newman has joined our Farm department this month, her interests are in general  farm animal medicine and surgery. We welcome her to Coombefield.

Jan 2011

After nearly 2 ½ years, Matt Burge is leaving the Coombefield team early January for a practice closer to home and friends. Matt is a world class dinghy sailor who, understandably, is choosing to move closer to Weymouth and Portland Harbour in order to pursue his passion. He is a sad loss to us and we’ll miss his commitment, knowledge and humour. We wish Matt all the best in his veterinary career and success on the racing circuit.

Calving workshop - when to pull?

Nov 2010

After the shock of having a blind fold on and a kicking calf in front of them the young(ish) farmers practised recognising front and back legs and placing calving ropes around the head. This then lead to a discussion about when to pull and how to position the calves and the cow during calving. After pasties and cups of tea, calf and heifer management followed. Did you know that 40% of heifers fail to reach having a second calf? Hopefully the importance of a good calving and subsequent management of the calves became more evident after the two hour workshop. We hope everyone found it useful and a big thank you to the Rowe family at Higher Uphay for letting us hold the workshop and using their very newly born calf for the practical.

Practice re-structuring

Sept 2010

From 4th October we are splitting the practice in two, which will create a dedicated team of six farm vets able to provide the services required by the modern farm.

New vet

Sept 2010

Farm Vet Lucy Morgan joined the team in early September. Lucy graduated 8 years ago and has devoted most of her career to working with farm animals. With family in Stockland, she already has a reasonable knowledge of the area and so has hit the ground running.
